Where to order Chinese food in Kolkata

Kolkata and Chinese cuisine share an intrinsic link, one that dates back to the late 18th century when Chinese immigrants from the Hakka-speaking regions of Southern China first came here in search of work, eventually making the city their home. It also led to the creation of what is popularly known as Indian-Chinese cuisine, resulting from their fondness for food from their homeland and adapting that with locally available spices and ingredients. It’s how the ubiquitous chilli chicken was born.

Fast-forward to now, you have a vibrant and thriving food culture that extends from Tangra and Tiretti Bazaar to Park Street, Ballygunge and beyond. Here’s a handy guide to celebrating the Lunar New Year and ordering in, from fine-dine eats to Chinatown favourites.
