We all spent the last year in a blur, days merging into one-another, completely forgetting to thank god it’s Friday. But Mumbai Gallery Weekend is starting off the year by making sure that changes. The ninth edition of MGW, taking place between 14-17 January, is bringing together the finest art galleries in the city to pack your weekend with a stellar line-up of art, design and culture.
Mumbai Gallery Weekend began in 2012 as an initiative to refresh the art scene in the city. Starting with nine leading art galleries, today, six years later, the initiative has brought together over 20 galleries and design venues. MGW’s aim is to make art interesting and engaging, not just to regular visitors, but also to the new and curious. Over the years, they have hosted artist-led walkthroughs, previews and lectures by art historians and museum professionals.
Mumbai Gallery Weekend details: venue, timing
The exhibition includes Atelier Ashiesh Shah’s designs, inspired by the Japanese philosophy of ‘Wabi-Sabi, at the soon-to-be-launched One8 Bungalow in Colaba and Rooshad Shroff’s beautiful celebration of craftsmanship at his new studio in Horniman Circle. Pundole’s will be previewing their much-awaited January auction of modern and classical works and Saffronart will be holding an auction for the works of KG Subramanyan. Chemould Prescott Road will also be opening its doors after 10 months to a solo preview of Aditi Singh’s work. Titled ‘somethings are always burning’, it promises a commune with nature and explores the world of colour, form, light and shadow.
And if you’re concerned about safety, you don’t have to be. Social distancing remains the top priority. Most galleries have been open for a while now and have been careful to manage visitor numbers, keeping all safety protocols in place. Tara Lal, gallerist of Chatterjee & Lal, welcomes visitors to the Weekend “This year MGW will be a 4-day preview event. Each participating space will be open to visitors from 12 to 8 pm daily. Every day will be a preview giving visitors the chance to visit the galleries of their choice on any given day without losing out on the experience of opening night. We are super excited with the lineup of exhibitions the participating art galleries have planned and look forward to welcoming you to spaces that you are familiar with and some new ones.”
