L’APOGEE COURCHEVEL, FRANCE 

Courchevel in the French Alps is part of Les Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski area in the world. It was conceived in 1946 as a ‘super ski resort’ and went on to host the Winter Olympics in 1992, making it the apogee of alpine escapes. India’s latest winter adventure destination, Skyview Patnitop by Empyrean spans 11 acres of the Sanget Valley. From the Lower Terminal, a 15-minute ride on the state-of-the-art ropeway transports you to the Upper Terminal at Patnitop. Designed by Dianeige of France, this is India’s highest ropeway with a ground clearance of 65m. It’s packed with a zig-zag zipline, tubing, sleigh rides and a scenic 2.5km Skyview Leisure Trail. HOTEL DES DROMONTS AVORIAZ, FRANCE 

Perched like an eyrie on a 1,800-metre shale cliff, this south-facing Alpine resort lies in the icy heart of Portes du Soleil, close to Geneva and Annecy. It was designed by Jacques Labro in the 1960s as a playground for big kids, before it got a vintage-chic facelift. HOTEL HIGHLANDS PARK, GULMARG 

With its Shire-like setting, Kashmir’s iconic Highlands Park adds a dash of vintage Bollywood to the charms of Gulmarg. Six of Rishi Kapoor’s films were shot here and the Bobby cottage, where a still from the movie graces the wood-panelled wall, is a hot pick. In winter, the surrounding slopes are snowbound, making for good trail runs and sleighing. NEDOU’S HOTEL, GULMARG

The story goes that in the mid 1800s, Croatian architect Michael Adam Nedou arrived in the subcontinent to build a palace for a maharaja from Gujarat. He came upon Gulmarg and introduced it as a holiday destination to British aristocrats. The scenic locale in the Pir Panjal mountains was ideal for fishing, hiking and golf in summer and skiing in winter. In 1888, he set up Nedou’s Hotel in Gulmarg.
