Taylor Lautner is the talk of the internet today as fans discover his role of Sharkboy has been recast for Netflix’s upcoming movie We Can Be Heroes. Directed by the prolific Robert Rodriguez, We Can Be Heroes follows the children of Earth’s biggest superheroes after their parents are abducted by alien invaders, leaving them to team up to save both their parents and the world. The film stars Priyanka Chopra, Christian Slater, Sung Kang, Boyd Holbrook, and Pedro Pascal. Already, We Can Be Heroes sounds like a fun family film, but Rodriguez had one more surprise in store this past summer: It’s a standalone sequel to his beloved 2005 film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl starred a pre-Twilight Taylor Lautner and Taylor Dooley as the titular heroes, two seemingly imaginary characters created by young Max (Cayden Boyd). We Can Be Heroes will find Sharkboy and Lavagirl as fully grown adults with their own daughter who has shark and lava powers, a perfect combination of her parents. Rodriguez confirmed Dooley would return for We Can Be Heroes, but for some time, it wasn’t clear if Lautner would be back as her grumpy partner.
The answer is: No, Lautner won’t return for We Can Be Heroes. Netflix unveiled new photos of the grown Sharkboy and Lavagirl, and it became very apparent that it was not Lautner under the brand new helmet. Social media users quickly shared their disappointment over Sharkboy’s recasting, with many demanding to know why Lautner didn’t return. Of course, their emotions were channeled through plenty of memes. Check out some of the reactions down below.
Beyond The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, Lautner reached superstar status when he was cast as Jacob Black in the Twilight franchise. He was one of the most sought-after young stars in Hollywood, but in recent years, Lautner has remained quiet. His last onscreen credits were a season of Scream Queens in 2016 and the series Cuckoo, which ended in 2018. Therefore, it stands to reason that Lautner could’ve returned to play Sharkboy if he had wanted to.
Most likely, Lautner chose not to take up the shark suit once again. Since Dooley is back, one can assume (or at least hope) Rodriguez offered the same opportunity to Lautner. That he didn’t accept it likely means he just didn’t want to play Sharkboy in We Can Be Heroes. While this can be disappointing for fans of the original Sharkboy and Lavagirl movie, at least Dooley will get to reprise her role for this new film. Perhaps Lautner will share his reasons for not coming back in the future, but until then, fans will continue to wonder why.
