What Supergirl Ending Means For Lex Luthor’s Future In The Arrowverse

As Supergirl is the next DC TV show to come to an end next year after season 6, what will happen to Arrowverse’s Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) on The CW?

Supergirl is the next Arrowverse drama that is coming to an end, and Lex Luthor is one of the characters whose future is unknown after the final season. Arrow wrapped its eight-year run on The CW early in 2020, as Oliver Queen’s story came to an end at last. The new TV season hasn’t even begun, but it’s already been revealed that another DC TV hero is hanging up their cape. Supergirl season 6 will be the show’s final one, consisting of 20 episodes that won’t premiere in the first quarter of the year like some of the other Arrowverse series. But as one Kryptonian leaves the franchise, another one is coming in with Superman & Lois.

After having played the Man of Steel in a guest capacity, Tyler Hoechlin is officially joining the Arrowverse full-time alongside Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois Lane. The spinoff, which will focus on Lois and Clark as parents, will premiere in February 2021 ahead of Supergirl’s final season. With details still under wrap on the last season of the Kara Zor-El drama, it remains to be seen if any of the supporting characters will continue being present in the Arrowverse. But one character that Superman & Lois ought to address is Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor. Given that Lex is Clark’s biggest nemesis, where is he going after Supergirl’s ending?

Since the Supergirl writers already killed and revived Lex once, it’s unlikely that they would do that again to Cryer’s character as the show come to an end. After his sister Lena shot him at the end of Supergirl season 4, the Monitor revived him as he had an important part to play in the 2019 crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths. Thanks to the 5-part event, Lex managed to alter his history on Earth-Prime, erasing his past crimes. Because of Crisis on Infinite Earths, it became the ultimate setup for Lex to naturally move over to Superman & Lois after Supergirl concludes its sixth and final season.

So far, there has been no mention about Lex going over to Superman & Lois, but that may be due to how Supergirl didn’t get to finish its past season due to the global pandemic. Originally, there was a different ending for Lex at the end of Supergirl season 5. It’s very possible that his season arc would conclude in a way that perhaps set up a potential move to the upcoming Arrowverse spinoff. Despite having been in the Arrowverse for as long as they have, Hoechlin and Cryer’s characters have barely interacted even though they’re arch-rivals. Supergirl has previously used a lot of Superman foes in the past seasons, but Crisis on Infinite Earths managed to give the spinoff a clean slate.

That includes Lex as he doesn’t have the same criminal past as he did on Earth-38. The idea that Cryer’s Lex would be done in the Arrowverse after Supergirl season 6 seems very unlikely. With a big talent like Cryer being cast as Lex, whose portrayal quickly gained a lot of critical acclaims, The CW would make a huge mistake to not utilize him in the Superman series. Perhaps the first season won’t have his Lex in a main antagonist capacity, but they’d still set up a bigger arc for him for coming seasons. However Supergirl ends its Arrowverse run, don’t be surprised to see Cryer’s Lex on Superman & Lois very shortly after that.
