WandaVision Will Make Sense In The MCU, Promises Paul Bettany

WandaVision star Paul Bettany reassures Marvel Cinematic Universe fans the upcoming Disney+ show will fit in with the rest of that world.

Paul Bettany, one of WandaVision‘s stars, says the upcoming show will fit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. WandaVision is the first of many Marvel shows in the works at Disney+. One of those, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, was supposed to debut this year. However, due to changes stemming from the coronavirus pandemic, WandaVision‘s release date of January 15, 2021 will come first. As the MCU Disney+ series were announced some time ago, viewers are understandably excited to see what the fuss is about.

Part of the excitement surrounding the shows comes from their connections to the MCU. Though previous Marvel TV series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter were technically canon in the movies, that relationship was mostly one-sided. That won’t be the case with the Disney+ shows, which come from the same part of the company as the films. What’s more, there’s already concrete evidence WandaVision in particular will have an impact on the MCU, as Scarlet Witch actor Elizabeth Olsen will appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That means the movie will likely reference the events of WandaVision.

Now, Bettany has provided even more information about WandaVision‘s connection to the Marvel films. In an interview with Collider, Bettany promised the show will make sense within the MCU:

I think it’s going to make you think about the MCU in a whole brand new way but I do think that it’s absolutely a part of that universe. As each episode unfolds, the audience will be able to peel back layer upon layer until this rather beautiful puzzle box written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman and shot by [cinematographer] Jess Hall will be revealed to everybody and it will make sense. All of the bonkers stuff will be about something.

Considering all WandaVision sets out to accomplish, it’s understandable Bettany felt the need to explain it fits into the MCU. The show will feature classic sitcom elements (even filming in front of a live studio audience), multiple decades, and the action components Marvel fans have come to expect. That’s quite a lot for one show to tackle. However, Bettany seems confident the different aspects of the show won’t stop it from feeling like a part of the MCU.

It’s worth noting the connection to Doctor Strange 2 will also help matters. As Scarlet Witch will likely acknowledge what happened in WandaVision, that will make the show feel more like an essential part of the MCU. Additionally, Marvel has certainly ventured in surprising directions before, such as with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Thor: Ragnarok. Instead of feeling separate from the MCU, those films served to expand the universe in fresh and exciting ways. With over a decade since Iron Man‘s release, it makes sense for Marvel to shake things up whenever possible. Hopefully, that’s what happens when WandaVision premieres next year.
