Disneyland will remain closed until 2021 due to the guidelines laid out by California health officials, according to Disney’s Q4 earnings call.
Disneyland is expected to remain closed until at least 2021. Earlier this year, the Mouse House shuttered all theme parks indefinitely, attempting to prevent further COVID-19 outbreaks. With a tally surpassing 52 million cases worldwide, the pandemic has caused an upheaval in travel sectors, the healthcare system, and the entertainment industry. Experiencing a financial shock due to the closure of the parks, the Walt Disney Company figured out plans to stay in business, including padding up the Disney+ catalog, raising $11 billion in debt, and laying off 28,000 employees.
In July, Disney’s flagship theme park canceled its reopening date after California witnessed a surge in coronavirus cases. Recently, sections of Shanghai Disney and Disney World have reopened while implementing new safety policies. Last month, reopening guidelines were issued by California for amusement parks, which were met with criticisms by those who work at Disneyland. Now after months of attempting to unlock its doors, it appears the Happiest Place on Earth will remain closed for the rest of the year.

Per Variety, Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure will remain closed until 2021 in order to adhere to state guidelines. Today, on a Disney investors call, the Walt Disney Company revealed the conglomerate’s fourth-quarter earnings, and Disney CEO Bob Chapek shared his thoughts on keeping Disneyland closed. Chapek expressed disappointment at keeping the theme park shuttered after 8 months and said, “We are extremely disappointed that the state of California continues to keep Disneyland closed despite our proven track record.”
According to the guidelines laid out by California, Disneyland must remain closed until coronavirus cases drop below 1 per 100,000 cases in the county. Reportedly, Orange County continues to witness 4 coronavirus cases per 100,000. Therefore, Disneyland must remain closed until at least December 31. As it stands, California Adventure will reopen Buena Vista street on November 19 to offer shopping and outdoor dining for patrons who meet health guidelines.
Of course, the updated timeline for Disneyland remaining closed until 2021 is unfortunate news for Disney employees, Disney shareholders, and theme park enthusiasts. While it remains to be seen what lasting impacts the coronavirus pandemic has created, no doubt, the Walt Disney Company will formulate plans to ensure Disneyland remains standing. Of course, Downtown Disney and Buena Vista Street are expected to sport Disney’s holiday decor and offers an avenue for guests to enjoy their visit while Disneyland remains closed.
