Shazam: Fury of the Gods star Asher Angel, who plays Billy Batson in the DCEU, admits he hasn’t yet read a script for the sequel. Angel’s Billy first appeared in the DCEU in 2019’s Shazam, which tracked his origin story from lost foster kid to a superhero with a family. Billy has the ability to turn into a superpowered adult (played by Zachary Levi) whenever he says the word “shazam,” and the end of Shazam saw him pass that ability onto his siblings as well. Shazam: Fury of the Gods is expected to continue Billy’s story while also featuring plenty more family action scenes.
Unfortunately, though, fans will have to wait a lot longer to actually see Fury of the Gods. Once scheduled for release in late 2022, Fury of the Gods suffered quite the delay when Warner Bros. shuffled around its DCEU calendar. Currently, the David F. Sandberg-directed film is slated for June 2023, debuting it a little over four years after the first Shazam. Therefore, much of the plot and supporting cast details are still being kept under wraps, and evidently that even extends to those involved with the film.

Angel recently appeared on Geek House Show, where he was inevitably asked about Fury of the Gods. The actor admitted he would like to reveal some teases for fans, but he genuinely can’t. Why? He hasn’t even read the script yet. Angel explained:
It’s so funny because when I get these questions, I would love to answer them and possibly give you a spoiler because I like to do that kind of stuff, but I don’t know anything. I haven’t read the script. I know as much as you: nothing. Maybe that’s because they think I spoil things, who knows? I don’t think I do but we’ll see what happens.
Back in September, Levi said production on Fury of the Gods is aiming for a spring 2021 start. It isn’t quite clear if the film’s release delay has altered those plans, though Sandberg did say production won’t require an adjustment just because of a pushed back premiere. Therefore, if Fury of the Gods is still hoping to start filming in the spring, Angel will presumably get his hands on a script soon. Of course, the fact that he hasn’t gotten one just yet could suggest the production start has been pushed back, but with several months to go before springtime, it’s hard to say for sure.
With a 2023 release date, Fury of the Gods is hopefully no longer in danger of being delayed any further. There’s plenty of time to begin and end production, so provided there aren’t any major behind the scenes complications, Fury of the Gods should be in the clear. Perhaps the reason that plot details haven’t been shared just yet is because the script is still undergoing rewrites. If that’s the case, fans (and Angel) should look forward to new information coming out over the next few months. Check back here for more updates about the latest Shazam adventure.
