Could The Umbrella Academy season 3 see another team, besides the original one and the Sparrow Academy? Here’s how it could happen.
The Umbrella Academy season 2 ended on a major cliffhanger as the Hargreeves returned to 2019 and found out that a different Academy had taken their place – but what if season 3 introduces a third Academy? Based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy made its debut on Netflix in February 2019 and was so well-received it surpassed one of the streaming giant’s most popular titles. A few weeks later, The Umbrella Academy was renewed for a second season, which arrived in July 2020.
The Umbrella Academy follows the dysfunctional family of adopted siblings the Hargreeves. All seven of them, along with other 36 babies, were born on the same day, at the same time, and their mothers weren’t pregnant when the day began. After hearing of this peculiar event, billionaire and scientist Sir Reginald Hargreeves set out to adopt as many of those babies as he could and got seven of them. As they began to develop unique sets of superpowers, he trained them and formed the team “The Umbrella Academy”, but Reginald wasn’t the best father figure, and the siblings parted ways. After not talking nor seeing each other for years, the Hargreeves reunited for Reginald’s funeral and to stop the fast-approaching apocalypse, which turned out to be triggered by their supposedly powerless sister, Vanya. The Hargreeves couldn’t stop the end of the world, and in order to survive, they jumped to a safer place and point in time thanks to the time-travel superpower of one of them.

Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy caught up with the Hargreeves in Dallas, Texas, in the 1960s, but they all landed at different points in time between 1960 and 1963. As a result, the siblings (except Five) were forced to move on with their lives, and they did so in their own way – for example, Klaus created a cult, and Allison got involved in the civil rights movement. Diego ended up in a mental asylum where he met Lila (Ritu Arya), with who he got romantically involved. One of the twists in The Umbrella Academy season 2 was the reveal that Lila also has superpowers, and is one of the 43 children. The other big reveal was the existence of the Sparrow Academy in the present day instead of the Umbrella team, but if there are two Academies, could there be a third?
Season 3 Of Umbrella Academy Debuts The Sparrow Academy
With The Commission as it was known destroyed and with Herb taking over it, the Hargreeves were given a briefcase so they could finally return to 2019. Once back in their time, the Hargreeves were surprised to learn that Reginald was alive and their team didn’t exist in this timeline, and he instead created “The Sparrow Academy”. If that wasn’t surprising and shocking enough, the Number One of the Sparrow team is Ben, who is alive in this timeline. The rest of the team, however, only appeared in the shadows, so it’s unclear if they are an alternate version of the Umbrella members or completely new people, though one of them is a floating, glowing green cube. What’s for sure is that the meeting between Reginald and the Hargreeves in 1963 influenced Reginald’s decision and creation of the Sparrow Academy, as they accidentally messed with the timeline.
The Umbrella Academy season 3, then, will be the proper debut of the Sparrow Academy, where viewers will finally learn who its members are and what their superpowers are, as well as what their main purpose is, as they seem to be a darker team than the Umbrella Academy.
Season 3 Also Needs To Give Space To Lila
Lila not only turned out to be one of the babies born on the same day as the Hargreeves, but she also has superpowers, confirming that the Hargreeves weren’t the only ones born with extraordinary abilities. Lila surprised viewers and the Hargreeves by mimicking their powers: she attacked them by mirroring Vanya’s powers, she jumped from one spot to the other when fighting Five, she showcased enough strength to fight Luther, and she rumored Allison into stopping breathing. Lila pretty much has all the powers of the Umbrella Academy, but as this happened in the final episode and she ran away to another timeline, viewers didn’t get to learn how exactly her powers work. The Umbrella Academy season 3 has to give some space to Lila, to develop her story and show what she’s truly capable of (and her weaknesses and limits as well).
Lila Will Continue Her Mother’s Work
Lila grew up with her parents in London until she was four years old, when old Five, while working as an assassin for The Commission, killed her parents and made it look as if it had been a break-in turned very bad. Lila hid in a secret room, where she was found by the Handler, who immediately adopted her. The Handler raised her and trained her as her own personal weapon, and used her to get the trust of Diego Hargreeves and convince him to join The Commission. The Handler’s mission was making sure that the timeline was intact, even going to extreme lengths to make sure nothing was changed by anyone. It’s because of this that she spent a lot of time going after Five, who was also her best assassin, so she couldn’t afford to have him on the loose, changing the timeline at his will. It’s unclear if Lila will lean more towards a heroic side or a villainous one, but she could continue her mother’s work of making sure everything develops as planned in the timeline (and, of course, going after the Hargreeves in revenge for all the mess they have caused), and for that, she’s going to need help.
Lila Will Make Her Own Academy From Other Powered Kids
At this point, it’s unknown where Lila jumped to, as well as how many jumps she has with just one briefcase. Supposing she can still travel a couple more times, as she didn’t really look like a woman with a plan when she left, Lila could return to 1989 (or perhaps a bit later) to get her own superpowered kids with the purpose of creating her own team, one that can be at the level of the Umbrella Academy (and the Sparrow, too). Having been trained by The Handler, Lila knows well how to handle other superpowered kids, so it’s not outside the realm of possibility that she could be working on building a new team. Of course, who could be part of it is unknown, but there are still over 30 unknown kids with superpowers out there, and that’s without counting Harlan. Lila witnessed what Harlan can do, so she might even enlist his help to create her own team.
There will be a lot of things to fix and explore in The Umbrella Academy season 3, and with Lila free and with the chance of jumping to different points in time, the Hargreeves will not only have to deal with the Sparrow Academy, Reginald, and everything they changed in the past, but also with whatever Lila has been planning all this time.
