Each Main Character’s Last Line In The Series

A big reason why How I Met Your Mother was so successful was its characters. For nine seasons, they entertained audiences with their quick wit and outrageous personalities. Even after they grew and changed, they still remained likable — most of them, anyway.

Despite their best efforts, the show’s two-part series finale was divisive, to say the least. Most of the fans’ discontent came from its ending when Ted and Robin rekindled their romance. It was such a controversial moment that it diverted attention away from everything else, including each character’s parting words. Their last lines are a significant part of their personal ending, so if those words were good, then maybe it’s not such a bad ending after all.

10 Victoria: “You Want Me To Send You Some Chocolate Truffle Streuselkuchen?”

Out of all of Ted’s girlfriends, Victoria was among the best. She was smart, funny, and kind. She showed her warm spirit during her last moment in the show.

When Ted was frantically searching for Robin’s locket in season 9, he called Victoria. It turned out that she had the item and had no issue with giving it back. But as the baker lived in Germany, she had to mail it to him. She then asked her former boyfriend if he wanted her to send some delicious baked goods as well.

9 Zoey: “The Hawk Is A Majestic Creature! She Means You No Har — Aah, No! I’m Your Friend! I’m Helping You!”

In season 9, Ted explained to his kids what happened to certain people he used to know. One of them was his ex-girlfriend, Zoey.

He revealed that he still occasionally heard about some of her activist work. The scene then cut to her protesting the mistreatment of a hawk, who ended up attacking her — which many viewers probably chuckled at as Zoey wasn’t always the most likable character. It was a funny scene and it was great to see that Zoey continued in her noble causes.

8 James: “Hey, Kids, Have I Ever Told You How I Met Your Father? It Was At A Party.”

Unlike his brother Barney, James committed to a monogamous life as early as season 2. However, his playboy side reared its ugly head once again years later as he cheated on his husband, which led to their marriage falling apart.

In Ted’s “people he used to know” , he revealed that James and his husband later got back together. James then explained to his own kids how he met their father, although the story was a lot shorter than Ted’s.

7 Patrice: “You’ve Never Looked More Beautiful, Robin.”

Robin and Patrice’s friendship followed a very consistent pattern: the former would say something sweet and the latter would scream at her. This continued into Patrice’s last appearance in the show.

When Robin came down the aisle at her wedding, Patrice threw out a compliment, and the bride replied with scorn. The interaction was a little different than usual because Robin said it in a quieter tone to avoid causing a scene. As Patrice is primarily known for these interactions, it was a great send-off for her character.

6 Barney: “Daddy’s Home.”

Barney’s behavior was awful for most of the show’s run. He constantly mistreated women and did some truly horrible things to them.

When he would hit on women, he favored the phrase, “Daddy’s home.” The creepy phrase was the last line Barney said in the show, but the context was different. Instead of saying it to someone that he was trying to sleep with, he said it about his daughter. The change in meaning showed how much his character had grown.

5 Marshall: “Do You Have Any Idea What Happened Right Here In This Very Bar?… Just… Just All Kinds Of Stuff.”

Marshall was always regarded as one of How I Met Your Mother’s funniest characters, yet his final words were serious. In the group’s last gathering at MacLaren’s Pub, Marshall engaged with some young people nearby and told them about the gang’s past adventures in the bar.

Thankfully, he didn’t go into details as that would’ve taken forever. Still, the short interaction between Marshall and the strangers served as a nice farewell to this beloved stomping ground.

4 Lily: “A Man With More Emotional Endurance Than Anyone I Know. It Was A Long, Difficult Road. Thank God We Finally Got Here.”

While everyone was hanging out at the bar for Ted and Tracy’s wedding, Lily gave a speech. Her words were a celebration that Ted’s long search for his true love had finally ended. She complimented him on how he kept going despite the many setbacks he went through.

It was a sweet appreciation of Ted’s long romantic journey. Yet, the effectiveness of the speech was a little diminished by the fact his journey would continue a few scenes later. But in the moment, Lily’s words were very powerful.

3 Tracy: “Funny How Sometimes You Just Find Things.”

After her cameo in the final moment of season 8, Tracy (aka the mother) became a regular character during the ninth season. In fact, she was one of the highlights of those uneven episodes.

During that time, she met every member of the core group of characters, the last one being Ted as the two first interacted at the Farhampton Train Station. They engaged in a conversation about the yellow umbrella that they both claimed ownership over. In the process, they realized that they’d just missed each other their entire adult lives. It ended with Tracy pointing out that people sometimes find things, in reference to both the umbrella and each other.

2 Ted: “Here I Go. Or…”

In the finale, Ted finally finished his nine-year-long story about how he met Tracy. Then his intuitive teenagers figured out that Ted was still in love with Robin. And the whole reason for the tale in the first place was so that he could ask their permission to date her.

After getting their consent, he was preparing to call her until he realized that he needed to do something bigger. This realization was Ted’s final line, and as it was a precursor to him doing something romantic, it was fitting.

1 Robin: “Television, Display Front Door Security. Television, Dis…Oh, For Pete’s Sake.”

Right before Ted’s showed up with the blue French horn, Robin said the final line in the show’s history. It wasn’t a deeply heartwarming and serious comment, but a joke about voice recognition.

Robin couldn’t get her television to understand her verbal request, as even in 2030, that technology was still struggling. It’s a joke that doesn’t work quite as well now that voice recognition has improved a lot. But it was pretty funny at the time.
